JOÃO QUEIROZ
Paintings
May 17 - June 28, 2025
From Saturday 17 May, the gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent works by João Queiroz. Born in Lisbon in 1957, he began exhibiting his paintings in the early 1980s, while studying philosophy at the University of Lisbon's Faculty of Arts. These two interests converge in his work, as he devotes himself to an informed reflection on the role of the image in contemporary times.
João Queiroz paints landscapes. He does not paint from the motif. His favourite mediums are oil, watercolour and encaustic. Eliminating any trace of figuration, his landscapes verge on abstraction. And when you look at them, you quickly realise that you need to read them twice, because here the painter is trying to get the viewer to deconstruct his or her usual way of perceiving a work of art.
For João Queiroz, the landscape is more a field of possibilities than a goal in his work; the landscape allows him to formulate a vast and extremely rich proposition, with an extraordinary range of elements and events available to him. His works are not accounts of a landscape, nor are they topographies. They represent a search for the possibility of a sensory rather than a descriptive representation of nature.
The work of João Queiroz is represented in numerous private et public collections in Portugal
